BMJ. Hi James how are you keeping?
JC. I'm good right now – it’s been busy with gigs and teaching and kids….

BMJ. Tell us a little about what you will be playing on July 1st.
JC. I’ll be playing some tunes from my album Undercurrent, which is out on 33 Records, and a selection of standards.

BMJ. BMJ members know Lee and Paula, but tell us briefly about yourself.

JC. Yeah, Lee and Paula are great! I moved back to Cardiff about 4 years ago from London. The bands I’ve been involved in include Sema with trumpeter Ben Thomas, this trio which has different line-ups, and a duo with Julian Martin. I’ve also had a duo residency for the last year and a half where I have used a different guest each week. I’ve loved it and from a small audience the attendance has grown. More recently I have been working across the bridge so my diary is looking healthy!

BMJ. I see from your bio that you run jazz courses – tell us more.
JC. This is something I love to do! I'm running my second one in July (13-15th) with Julian Martin on a farm in Somerset. Its a fantastic location and the food (organic) cant be beaten! The students usually come to the course having been to loads of these things and have been blinded by endless amounts of information. This, I feel, clogs up their playing and through various musical exercises the freedom achieved is great! There’s a problem-solving session where harmony questions are answered in a practical way.

BMJ. Will you any of your recorded work with you on July 1st?
JC. I’ll have copies of my CD, Undercurrent, which is out on 33 Records.

BMJ. You’ll be our first guitar trio, so we’re looking forward to a great evening.
JC. And me! See you then.

Pete
